Gov. Walker touts new, more accurate jobs numbers

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Gov. Scott Walker is touting new positive jobs numbers he says is a more accurate reflection of how the state’s economy is turning around. Democratic challenger Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett says Walker is cooking the books by releasing the figures before they have been reviewed by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The figures based on a census of businesses released Wednesday, May 16th show Wisconsin gained 23,300 public and private jobs in 2011. Previous totals based on a smaller survey of businesses showed the state lost 33,900 jobs over the year.

GAB says weapons can be banned at polling sites

MADISON (AP) — Local governments can ban concealed weapons at all manner of polling sites, from city halls to assisted living facilities, state election officials have concluded.

Wisconsin’s concealed carry law went into effect in November. The state has held three elections since then with no concealed carry-related problems at the polls reported.

Gerald Nichol, a member of the Government Accountability Board, the entity that oversees elections, and local clerks have been asking about how the law applies at the polls for several months.

The board has been too busy preparing for this spring’s recall elections to develop answers until now, board spokesman Reid Magney said. He wasn’t sure when the first requests were made.

Dozens of animals removed from Fond du Lac County property

TOWN OF FRIENDSHIP — Fond du Lac County officials removed dozens of animals in various stages of starvation from a home in the Town of Friendship Thursday, May 10th. Some of the animals discovered on the property along Chestnut Rd. were already dead.

In all, officials removed 65 dogs and 50 goats from the property. The Fond du Lac Humane Society euthanized two dogs that could not be saved.

Investigators say they found the property because of a wayward calf. It had strayed onto Highway 45 near the Winnebago County line late Wednesday night, May 9th. A deputy took the calf to the property to determine if it belonged there. The deputy discovered a 10-year-old boy was the only person in the home. He also found dead goats at the farm and more than 60 dogs scattered around the property.

The agriculture classes at Sheboygan Falls High School have an on-campus garden plot, a leased acre on a nearby farm and access to many more acres at another local farm.

With very little money, the roughly 100 students and their teachers have built garden beds and raised beds, grown produce they've used to supplement the school lunch line, raised turkeys and even earned a little money. If they've accomplished that much on a shoestring budget, imagine what they could do with $25,000...
